There are games when it feels like Cam Smith is on the verge of breaking out. Although the results offensively this season haven’t proven better than 2025, the underlying metrics point to improvement taking place.
Hopefully only a matter of time before those translate into actual results. Friday’s game against the Padres offered a reminder what that could look like.
Led by Smith’s two home run performance, the Astros were still able to capitalize on a night when Ronel Blanco had his fair share of struggles. That’s not good news for a rotation already light on options, but that’s the reality Houston created for itself. Thankfully, Blanco didn’t fully implode, keeping the Padres to three runs on four hits and three walks. A bend but don’t break kind of start. It also helps when the lineup converts when it matters.
With Blanco only throwing 4.2 innings, it was up to the bullpen to cover the remains 4.1 frames. And they did, allowing only four baserunners while striking out six across five relievers.
Friday’s win keeps the Astros up 1.5 games over the Rangers, who also won. But the Mariners fall four games behind with their own loss. Overall, it was a much needed win and moved Houston to 60-57 on the season.
