Peter Lambert started the season arguably as #10 on the starting pitching depth chart. That’s not an exaggeration. Hunter Brown, Mike Burrows, Cristian Javier, Tatsuya Imai, Lance McCullers, Jr., Cody Bolton, Colton Gordon, Ryan Weiss, and Spencer Arrighetti all took their turns as a 2026 starting pitcher before Lambert got his first shot.
Since that first start, he’s been a godsend for a middling to below middling team, the most consistent and reliable arm in a rotation that swaps pieces out like a Ship of Theseus. Every 5th game, Lambert would take the ball, and you knew he was at the very least going to give the Astros a chance to win.
Every time until Thursday, that is, when Lambert got lit up for 9 earned runs in less than 4 innings. All season long, Astros fans couldn’t believe what they were continually getting from Lambert. Did the manufacturer’s warranty finally run out? Has he reached his cliff, or have we been on a downward slope this whole time and not noticed?
Month by month, Lambert has actually been pretty consistent this year:
Lambert’s Stuff+ and Location+ actually haven’t changed much as the season has gone on, but it should be noted that neither were particularly outstanding to begin with, even when the results were.
Up until Thursday’s 9 ER start, Lambert had an incredible run. In the 21 starts before, he had only 1 run 5 run outing and two 4 run outings. 18 of his starts he allowed 3 runs or less. In fact, it was 2 or less runs in 16 of those. In a season where the Astros have found many many ways to lose, Peter Lambert was never one of those ways.
Lambert had a stretch where in 13 of 14 games, he didn’t allow more than 2 runs. 2015 Dallas Keuchel never had a run like that. Neither did 2019 or 2022 Justin Verlander. Lambert has definitely been a life preserver in the choppy waters of the 2026 season, but nobody is mistaking him for a Cy Young winner.
The results are catching up to Lambert, whose xERA (3.44) and FIP (3.80) aren’t far off from his ERA (3.68), but whose xFIP (4.44) and SIERA (4.19) are higher, and that gap was higher before his 9 run star on Thursday.
What’s also catching up to him is his usage. While his Stuff+ and Location+ have remained steady month to month, his innings per start have progressively declined. Between Sugar Land (where he started the season) and Houston, he’s now pitched 137 innings. That’s the most he’s pitched in a season since 2018 when he pitched 148. It’s undoubtedly starting to wear on him, but the Astros don’t have a lot of other places to turn.
The name “Peter” famously means “rock”. Let’s see how much more we can squeeze out of this one.

The Astros regained a half game lead in the division, thanks to a comeback win last night against the Yankees and a Texas loss against the White Sox.
Facing off against Lambert for the Yankees is our good friend “TBD”, and by good friend I mean “the recurring entity that routinely ravages the Astros offense”.
Update: “TBD” has been determined to be right handed pitcher, Elmer Rodriguez, called up from the minors. He’ll be making his 5th start of the season, the last one coming on June 21, where he went 4 innings against the Reds, allowed 3 runs on 4 hit and 2 walks, while striking out 4. He’s gone 4 to 4.2 innings in each of his starts, with a 4.76 ERA.

Kinda the opposite of yesterday’s pitching match up. Yesterday it was the rookie Pecko vs. the Yankees Will Warren, a dependable mid level starter. Now it’s the Yankees’ rookie Rodriguez vs. the Astros Lamber, also a dependable mid level starter
I think Lambert is feeling the unusual workload. Unusual for him. His longer big league seasons had been 89 IP (2019) and 87 IP (2023), now he is at 122 and counting.
