Other than Yordan Alvarez and possibly Jeremy Peña, I can’t think of a player more important to the Astros’ chances of success in these last two months of the season than Hunter Brown. Yes, he only pitches once every five days, but his performance over the next several weeks matters greatly. It took him a while to shake some of the rust off following his return from the IL, and his last two starts have been encouraging (12.2 IP, 2 ER, 2 BB, 12 SO).
For the Astros to not only maintain, but also improve upon, their current AL West lead, Brown will need to continue that upward trajectory. There isn’t a reason to think that he won’t. This team, however, needs to capitalize on the majority of his starts considering the state of the rotation beyond him and Peter Lambert. If my memory doesn’t fail me, I recall both he and Framber Valdez each having a rough stretch of starts last summer that did play a role in costing Houston a postseason berth. Let’s hope it is a different story this time around.
