There are plenty of question marks behind Hunter Brown and Peter Lambert in the Astros’ rotation. With Dana Brown unable to acquire any help for the starting staff at the trade deadline, the organization is once again relying upon internal reinforcements. But, unlike last season, the hope is that the plan actually works out this time around. A tall ask. However, Hayden Wesneski did his best on Tuesday to at least lessen some of those concerns.

Houston will need Wesneski to become a dependable mid-rotation arm in a quick hurry. His performance since his activation off the IL at least provides some hope that he can do that much as long as Myles Straw isn’t involved. Of course, easier said than done, and it is only two starts. But it is a step in the right direction for Wesneski and the Astros.

With Trey Yesavage leaving due to injury after two scoreless innings, the Blue Jays had to turn to their bullpen. Chad Dallas got the job of relieving Yesavage, and Houston’s lineup capitalized on the unexpected turn of events, scoring six runs in three innings. Most of that damage occurred in the fifth inning, with the Astros scoring four runs (Jose Altuve’s RBI single followed up by Taylor Trammell’s three-run home run).

Altuve would eventually drive in a second run with another RBI single in the seventh to increase the lead to 7-2.

Another win for the Astros improves their record to 59-56 on the season, 11-2 in the last 13 games. While the Rangers’ win against the Giants kept the AL West lead to 2.5 games, the Mariners lost, increasing their deficit to 3 games. But overall, Tuesday’s win was a positive development, especially if Wesneski proves to be a reliable option in the rotation.
