I’ve been down on the Astros for most, if not all, of this season. Deservingly so. But I didn’t fully anticipate how mediocre the rest of the AL West would be in 2026, so that has brought hope to a situation that normally wouldn’t occur.
Whether that’ll continue this season is another matter. It has taken a five-game winning streak to keep the Astros within striking distance of the AL West lead. With the Rangers and Mariners providing ample opportunities to stay in the race, it is also possible that one of them might go on their own run in the near future. For Houston to remain in the mix and possibly claim the top spot in the division, they’ll need more winning streaks like this one and continued struggles from their rivals.
I have questions about whether this roster can do that as we look toward August and September. For the Astros’ sake, though, I hope that Seattle continues to struggle, as they do own the tiebreaker with a 7-1 record against Houston. Another win on Sunday against the White Sox, and securing a sixth straight victory, could prove quite beneficial later this season.
