The Astros should do nothing at the trade deadline. It isn’t the sexy answer, but it is the most prudent one.
Selling is tempting, but the Astros still have a legitimate chance to win the AL West and host a Wild Card Series. Division titles have become commonplace during the Jim Crane era, but before 2017 the Astros had won just six division championships in franchise history. As of July 26, FanGraphs gives Houston roughly a 33% chance of reaching the postseason (I think the true number is a bit higher). Trading away players like Jeremy Peña, Josh Hader, or Bryan Abreu would likely drive those odds close to zero.
The return would probably be solid, but let’s be honest about what that actually means. Trading Peña or Hader effectively sacrifices the 2026 season for the possibility of adding two or three wins per year from 2028 through 2033. Will those future teams be contenders? Maybe. But even if the prospects develop into everyday starters, the Astros could simply go from a 78-win team to an 81-win team. That’s not enough upside to justify punting on a club that still has a real shot this season.
Buying doesn’t make much sense either. This deadline is shaping up to be a seller’s market, and acquiring an impact player would likely gut an already thin farm system. More importantly, the payoff probably isn’t that large. Even adding a prime Aaron Judge to an otherwise average team would only increase its chances of winning a best-of-three playoff series by roughly five percentage points. An above-average starting pitcher or complementary bat would move the needle even less.
Standing pat is the best course of action. The Astros shouldn’t throw away a chance to win another AL West title—something they may not have a realistic opportunity to do again for several years. At the same time, they lack the prospect capital to make a truly transformative addition without weakening the major league roster.
Sometimes the hardest move a front office can make is no move at all. In Houston’s case, patience is the smartest play.
