The 2026 MLB Draft is underway today and the Astros, for the first since selecting J.B. Bukauskas 15th overall in 2017, have a top-20 pick. In fact, the organization has two picks in the top-30 (17th and 28th). The last time they had two picks in the top-30? In 2015, when Jeff Luhnow’s front office selected Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker within the top-five.
I don’t think it’s a stretch to state that this year’s draft is a highly consequential one for the Astros. In addition to two picks within the top-30, Houston also has $13.712 million in bonus pool money, just shy of double their $7.18 million bonus pool allotment from last year. There’s a real chance that the Astros have add an influx of promising talent to a relatively barren farm system.
But the circumstances surrounding this year’s draft creates some pause. After all, Dana Brown is in the last year of his contract. While this year’s draft doesn’t really hold any bearing on this year’s Major League roster, it’s still an odd arrangement to have a general manager who could be ousted from his role in a few months to oversee a draft of this importance. The organization for quite some time has seem to have a misalignment of long term goals and the uncertainty around the front office doesn’t help that perception.
The Astros hopefully add some notable talent to a minor league system in desperate need of it. While the lower levels do hold some promise, there isn’t much in terms of immediate reinforcement’s residing in Sugar Land or Corpus Christi. With a pair of top-30 picks and a large bonus pool, there’s a real chance to reestablish the foundation of a sufficient farm system, a hallmark during the club’s golden era. As we all know, without that self-sustaining pipeline, it is increasingly difficult for most organizations to maintain success, including the Astros.
Astros @ Rangers Game Information and Gamethread Details
Peter Lambert gets the start this evening against the Rangers and the Astros could use the win. With Hunter Brown’s recent struggles, Lambert is the most consistent starter on this pitching staff. Dana Brown and the Astros were extremely fortunate to have re-signed Lambert following his initial cut from camp back in Spring Training.
