Jagger Beck (19 yo) had his best outing of his young career. No walks, and just 1 hit, with 7 strikeouts in 4 innings of piggyback work. The 1 hit was a well struck double to straight away center and Kevin Alvarez had a good shot at catching it at the warning track just before the wall, but looked like he felt the walls presence and couldn’t hold on to it. Would’ve been a good catch.
On the night the announcers called out velocity twice that I heard, and the 1st was 96, and the 2nd was 94. He threw a sinker a few times down and in, but preferred to attack up in the zone with the 4-seam it looked like. Still looked like he deploys 2 distinct breaking pitches with one being more of a downer curve, and the other a sharper version of that with slider action.
It’s also worth mentioning that Fayetville played the best team in the league tonight, so it’s not like he performed well against a bunch of scrubs. The FredNats lead the International league in both walks and homeruns. It was good to see him not allow either one tonight.
Bryce Mayer is scheduled to pitch today for Corpus. Hopefully he can right the ship today as he’s had two abbreviated outings in a row where he’s struggled with command. He’s still carrying an insane K/9 rate, but the BB/9 rate has now doubled compared to last season. His HR/FB percentage is extremely high so it’s possible that he’s afraid to attack the strike zone at the moment because when he does it seems to leave the yard. Not for sure, but I plan on trying to give that one a watch if possible.
