I am not sure about the rest of y’all, but I’ve been ready for Opening Day for months. Once the holidays are finished, I eagerly wait for the day when warmer weather and baseball are back in my life. Spring Training helps somewhat, yet it is only a tantalizing appetizer. Thursday is the day, for the fans of the other 28 teams, when the games actually matter again. And, even if it is ultimately brief, the hope that a new season represents.

Unfortunately, it is only Wednesday, so we will have to wait one more day before the season actually starts. But while we wait, the Astros announced their 2026 Opening Day roster.

Other than perhaps Jeremy Peña staying off the IL to start the season, there weren’t many unexpected developments on the position player side. It became increasingly clear in the last week or two that Brice Matthews was making a stronger case to make the Opening Day roster over Zach Cole, who struck out 40% of the time in Spring Training across 50 plate appearances. Those swing-and-miss tendencies will need to be addressed if he is going to stick in the big leagues. Although Matthews is listed as an infielder, he will also be used as an outfielder in this utility role to start the season.

It’ll be curious to see how Joe Espada handles the infield logjam. Carlos Correa will move back to third base with Peña on the active roster as the starting shortstop. Christian Walker is the better defender at first base than Isaac Paredes, so expect the former to play there more than the latter to start the season. Jose Altuve will handle the majority of reps at second base. Simply put, it’ll be a game of musical chairs to see who ends up where. In any case, Yordan Alvarez might see the field more than anyone expected in the offseason, with him in left field opening up designated hitter for Paredes. Of all the storylines entering this season, this one is by far the most intriguing.

The outfield, as one can guess, remains a bit of a mess. The Astros might have one of the worst right field arrangements in baseball at the moment. It’ll be up to Cam Smith and Joey Loperfido for the time being to see if that narrative changes anytime soon. To no great surprise, Jake Meyers remains the starter in center. Again, Alvarez might see left field at a higher clip than what we initially assumed in the offseason, especially with Paredes still on the roster. Matthews will get some looks in the outfield, primarily in left and center.

For the pitching staff, the Astros will roll out a five-man rotation for the time being until the schedule dictates expanding to include a sixth starter in April. Hunter Brown will be the Opening Day starter for obvious reasons, with Mike Burrows, Cristian Javier, Tatsuya Imai, and Lance McCullers Jr. appearing in that order to open the 2026 season. In relief, Bryan Abreu will be the closer until Josh Hader returns from the IL. The rest of the bullpen shakes out to include Bryan King, Steven Okert, Christian Roa, Kai-Wei Teng, Ryan Weiss, Roddery Muñoz, and AJ Blubaugh. As noted by Chandler Rome, the bullpen has plenty of flexibility to start the season, with King, Blubaugh, Teng, Weiss, and Roa all having minor league options remaining. Along with Hader, Bennett Sousa will also return to the active roster once he is ready to come off the IL.
